Los Toltecos...She is finished...No??
Well Los Toltecos ended with as much or as little flair as it started. The manager gave up for another restaurant and didn't tell my management or me until I wasted a Saturday dragging my equipment out to play only to find a very small and very feisty hispanic DJ that delighted in telling me it was his gig. I kept this months Saturday open for them as well, only to find out my replacement was permanent. No big deal to me, the bar is not that fun to play, but what a terrible way to run a business. Oh maybe that's why it is not a fun place to play! Anyway, I am available the 4th Saturday of each month now.....any ideas????

Imagine my surprise when stopping by one of my favorite bars in Leesburg today and I see a sign, that looks a lot like my signs, for Ben Andrews at Downtown Saloon. He is playing there on Sundays and going under the moniker of Ben's Juke Joint! Hey that sounds a lot like Lenny's Juke Joint!!!! Damn should I just send him my set list as well. Nothing against Ben, I don't know who the hell he is and Google doesn't know him. He may be a great guy, but could you come up with a little more imagination with your freakin' signs??? I have spent a long time, two and a half years building up Lenny's Juke Joint; and thanks to Scott for getting me started I have played hundreds of gigs, literally hundreds, of gigs since the December 10th, 2006 gig at Downtown Saloon that started it all! Now with professional representation, James Turner Productions, I play in some of the greatest bars in Northern Virginia, including Downtown Saloon on occasion. At first it didn't bother me but the more and more I thought about it, it makes my skin crawl. Legally it may be ok, but it is very disrespectful to a performer who has put a lot of warm butts in barstools and money in the cash register at the Downtown Saloon! I still like the bar, it is just a cozy place to go hang out! The staff is great, the beer is cold and the food is great! And I encourage you to go listen to Ben and his friends on Sunday nights (if I am not playing somewhere else) but just realize, he has absolutely nothing to do with Lenny's Juke Joint!

Getting gigs in Northern VA can be hard, especially with the economy the way it is and bars going under or trying to cut back. As an entertainer that has gone from DJing to managing bands to playing open mikes to finally playing my own gigs I feel I have come full circle. Now as things change in my life, I depend on my music for my sanity and a little for the lucrative aspect of it. I was out on the street trying to get gigs for myself a couple years ago and got a call from James Turner Productions. They are a rather large booking agent firm in Alexandria. I now see my gigs getting more frequent and a lot more lucrative. The only bad thing is that I have to travel. I play regularly in Baltimore, DC, and Northern VA (Arlington, Alexandria, and further). I went from busking at coffee houses to trying to pinch some bar owners to let me play for a meager cut of the proceeds for the night.
Now as I try to get gigs that are closer to home, and this benefits me as well as the bar owners for I can bring more of my friends in locally, I find I am getting shut out. Not because of my ability although I consider my self only average among many great local musicians, but because I am too pricey. I am finding bar owners wanted to pay less and less when in the past they have paid close to reasonable rates for 4 hours of entertainment! What I am finding out is that my fellow musicians are giving away there talents for free beer and meager tips. Now guys and gals you may do this for the love of music or because it is your inspiration. Or playing for the masses is your muse, but your talents are worth more!!!!!
Most bars in the Northern VA area can afford to pay a musician well for a night of entertainment. And if we work at it, through internet and word of mouth we will put people in their bars. It is a win win situation!
Please I beg you, consider this when you are beating the street and finding places to play. Playing for free may be great to get out and have your music heard but later down the line when you want to get paid you will be remembered by the bar owner as the musician who would play for tips. As well as the musician that comes in behind you to get a gig being told that "I know you get paid XX amount of dollars in Baltimore but this is not Baltimore." Come on guys, it is work learning new songs week to week, it is fun work, but work none the less. And most of my friends on myspace and around town that play are great musicians that deserve to be paid for their work!

Getting better at this!
Well as I roll in to Fall I am looking back at all the places I played over the summer! Barry Charlton took me in to a new realm of lessons as he took me out on the road and we formed Free Draft! Unfortunately we are not playing again until November and then only twice so far. But I have learned a lot over the summer and my show is taking shape I think. I have realized I need some faster songs, but i still don't want to just play classic rock either. I am forging into country a little more and looking for some old blues and jazz tunes to round out my sets. Any suggestions shoot me an email. Barry and I are talking about the studio a little. I have a few hours at Cabin Studios in Leesburg that I have been sitting on for a year. We will get in there hopefully by the end of this year and have a cd out! If any of you have suggestions on the songs that we or I do that you want on a cd let me know as well.
So....a new venue this week, The Zen Bistro in Arlington. Back at Spanky's for my monthly show there as well as Fish Market! Got some newer music coming at you at these gigs! Some Tim McGraw and Tom Petty! As well as others so come out have a pint and listen to some blues!!!!! or country!!!!! or folk!!!!!

Hey Strangers!!!!
It has been a while since I have written anything! I have just been super busy. In the last few months I have played SO much and missed out on a lot of things. I expect to slow down in the coming month! Some new venues, Southside 815 and O'Sullivans! I got to tell you I love them both! O'Sullivans is a great Irish pub and Barry "Charleston" and I had a great time! It was hot, it was crowded, but the beer was cold and the service was great!! Thank you Teresa!
Southside 815, my buddy Fred joined me and I think a good time was had by all! I had Maryland crab meat and Virginia ham with gravy over homemade biscuits here and it was HEAVENLY!!!!
I also am becoming a regular down at the Fish market it looks like! They have booked me several times in the next month. Barry and I are playing there sometime soon. I honestly don't know without going back to my date page but it is soon! I don't need to tell anyone in the area about this place, it is just great! Old Town Alexandria, and just a great atmosphere! Right around the corner from Southside 815!
I played two private parties and had fun in DC and in Potomac MD. The guys in DC heard me at Tim's and so they knew what they were getting into. Last night in Potomac was a different story! A very nice couple with a knack for throwing parties obviously!!!! A great crew and beautiful home! Sorry we could not get the Air Supply and Peter Frampton played that you were so eager to hear! I think in both cases Barry and I have made some friends and we hope to see you again!
My songbook is getting bigger and smaller....I am adding songs, Dave Matthews and ALO! Some new music and some old. And I am trying memorize the old as much as I can. My goal is to be music standless by the end of the year for some gigs. I did notice that Dave Matthews uses a teleprompter for lyrics so I don't feel as bad:)
Well I am rambling now so I will just say I hope to see you all soon! Look at the guest page and see what paces interest you! Come out and see us and remember to say hi!

The Ruins at Downtown Saloon!!
Last night was the open mike at the Downtown Saloon as always. Dave pepper played as well as Joe and Mike (together and solo). My long lost buddy Jeff stopped by and simply tore it up on three tunes with the help of Tim on the harp! We gotta get Jeff out here more! The big news of the night though was a new band called the Ruins! They had asked to play a set last night and I agreed! What a stroke of luck! These guys were SO good! Rob, one of their guitar players even joined me on a couple! I am trying to think who they sound like but am drawing a blank. There are obviously several different influences going on in the band. They also look like they are having such a good time that they are a blast to watch! Their drummer and bass player seem like they have been playing together for years! And their singer/slant rhythm player has an incredible voice as well! So I guess you can tell I really enjoyed them, so watch for the name out and about as they start getting gigs!
Thanks to all that came out!
I am taking a a week off but will be back with a slew of JTP gigs! The 28th and the 1st are with Barry! Duo name TBA!!!! Thanks for your support!

Playing at Tim's River Shore!
Played at Tim's again for a last minute gig from JTP this weekend! Tim changed it up on me and had me out on the dock. I asked if after last time they wanted me further out to sea but they assured me this is what they do in the summer!!!! Look at the pics in gigs gallery for a look at the stage and my view! What a great day!!! We had a breeze, a big crowd and only a few trains! This is quickly becoming my favorite place to play! All the people are nice and when you are looking at the water you can not help but have a good time!!! Next time I hope some people from the Juke Joint can come down to join us. Also I talked to Tim about the prospect of Barry and I both doing a gig there.....together! So now that it is in his head we wait for the call from JTP:) Anyway, Barry is subbing at Downtown Saloon this Thursday, but I am playing in Ashburn at Beef O'Brady's on Friday and back at the Lighthouse in Berryville. I only have a few more gigs until I am taking a week off to go to Maine! So maybe I will learn some new songs for the end of the month:) Thanks for the support folks! See you out and about this summer!

May 28 2007 - 12:56 PM
Good weekend from the Juke Joint!!!! Starting with the open mike on Thursday! Barry was there to start it for me, cuz my son just kicked ass at a concert in Summit Point and I had to be there. Now my brother used to be my favorite trumpet player, he has played with Streisand (ICCCKKKK), and Don Henley and on countless movies and albums, but I got to tell you this Matthew Burridge kid is up and coming!!!!!! Look out Wynton!!! Chuck MangiWHO??? Doc whatever his name is....... Keep an eye on this kid!!! Matthew Burridge, soon to be signed on blue Note:)
Anyway, Barry is playing as I walk in and people tell me in the nicest way possible that I have lost my job:) He was burning from the start! Then Fred joined in as well as Tim and a new guy on trumpet named Earl......"My name is Earl". It was a great night of jamming! Joe played a few for us and Mike came in as well. It was just an incredible night of music.
And thanks to Shawn we raised almost $50 for Habitat! It was like $43 but I am just gonna round it up, we got a ways to go! Thanks Shawn!!!
Saturday I played at White Palace and then Barry and I played a private party on Sunday. I recorded Sunday and will get some on the jukebox!
Barry's website is up and running. www.barrycharlton.com please go on and sign his guestbook and put yourself on his email list. Look for changes coming to that site as he takes it over and gets some tunes on it!!!!
Thanks for all the support this month. Got some good gigs in June so I will send an email out soon!

Bungalow's in Cascades last night! Well you can hear a couple of the songs on the jukebox! This had to be one of the most fun nights I have had since I started! Hopefully a duo was formed! Barry on his Barry-ized Strat and pedals galore. Throw in some fake teeth and a lil distortion and you have a party! The crowd was pretty good for a Tuesday night and we just got tons of compliments. For us it was kind of a paid rehearsal, we are playing in Shepherdstown on Friday! But the more and more we play the more it comes together. Anyway, you be the judge, Friday night at Stonewall's in Shepherdstown from 10 PM to 2 AM! Hope to see you there!!!!
|
May 5 2007 - 10:27 AM
Well kind of a slow night at Maxwell's last night but what a great bar!!! I finally met Paul the owner in person and got to work with Casey and the bartender that shall remain nameless:) I had a pair of lovely dancing cousins that even danced to my first ever bluegrass version of Cats In The Cradle!! I met a lot of people and hopefully will see them again if I get invited back:) I will keep you posted!
In the meantime, a busy week next week with Bungalow's, Downtown Saloon, Stonewall's and White Palace.....Damn I am getting tired just typing it!!! And I haven't even gotten to my gig at the beach yet:) I hope some of my NOVA friends can make it out to the gigs this week, there are plenty to choose from!
Happy Cinco De Mayo and have a great week!

May 4 2007 - 11:47 AM
Good Time at the Open Mike last night! Not a lot of players but plenty of people to listen. Fred was there as usual and played with me and David Smiley. Dave played several songs without the use of his book. She's No Lady and R.O.C.K. In The USA were among his tunes! He is heading off to Germany I think he said so we may not here from him in a while. He did invite us out there though so maybe we should take the open mike on the road! A guy named Chris who I had never met played last night. He started with my favorite blues tune, Deep Elem Blues and then played some originals! "Here's To You" I think was one of them and I gots to tell you this guy has talent!!! We did invite him back so I hope to see him again and Chris you are welcome to play the Gibson!!
Tim was there to add the harp to the mix on several songs. Another good version of Makin' Whoopee I will try to get it up on the site by Sunday or Monday!
Remember Barry and I are playing in Sterling at Cascades on Tuesday at Bungalow's!!! Barry just got added. I had such a good time at my lesson last week, I asked him to come Tuesday and he agreed! So check us out!!!
Have a good weekend folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apr 29 2007 - 10:11 AM
I played yesterday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds at a benefit for the Relay for Life put on by the Ruritan Club. The heavy winds and threat of rain may have hurt their crowd a little. It was a chili cook off and they had a bunch of people huddled in jackets in the pavilion where you would expect to see people in shorts and tank tops. What a great group though. They had baked goods, burgers and dogs. And of course several different pots of chili from no bean turkey to near lethal HOT!!!! I will put a link for Relay for Life up today sometime, I will not try to tell you all about it off the top of my head, except that it is for cancer research! Having lived through that scare I have a soft spot for this charity and others like it (LIVESTRONG, etc.) Yesterday $600 was raised for Relay for Life and I was happy to be a part of it. One of our shows coming up we will also take a portion and give to Relay for Life as well so stay tuned. Thanks to Roger and his crew for making me feel welcome!!! OH and then I went home and DID NOT play at King's Court, but rumor has it my posters are still up in the bar!
|
Apr 26 2007 - 7:55 AM
I stopped by King's Court last night on my way home from work and guess whose signs were up for playing on Saturday night??? Yours truly....evidently when Fabian said he didn't have me scheduled for Saturday the 28th, he forgot about the 6+ signs he posted in his bar saying I was playing there on the 28th! Now I am not sure whether this is Alzheimer's or some other brain dysfunction, but maybe we ought to hold a charity benefit for Fabian at King's Court! Aww forget it, he would probably double book us, maybe we will have it at Downtown Saloon! I mean this guy should not be driving or operating heavy machinery! REMEMBER Shotgun Ride is playing in Leesburg on Saturday as well. They are at the old Firehouse. Check out their schedule on their website from my links page. Bare Bones is going on shortly after 9 at Downtown Saloon and from what I hear are great as well! You can see both actually because Shotgun Ride plays earlier! Have a good time this weekend, I will enjoy my weekend off I guess:)

Apr 25 2007 - 9:10 PM
Sorry for the last minute change folks! Fabian at King's Court once again has screwed up. He decided after making a commitment to me to play on Saturday that he can have a full band in on Saturday. So after advertising on my site and sending emails and making posters for his venue, he has cancelled me with no offer for making it up to me except to reschedule on another Saturday night that he would probably screw me out of at the last minute again. He then tried to tell me he had me scheduled for May 5th when Fred and I are playing in DE at Irish Eyes!
If you were planning on going out to King's Court Saturday I would suggest Downtown Saloon. They have good bands on Saturdays and the management and staff there are top notch. It is less smoky and the prices are better.
I honestly think that some people in this business forget they are running a business and also dealing with real people. It is a fine line I know that, but if you give your word to be at a gig or as a club owner book a gig then you should stand by it. I felt terrible last month when I had to cancel due to the flu. And I am paying for it by not getting gigs there again. Fabian decides he rather have a band and rather than talk to me to either to open for them and pay me less or anything, he will cancel me on a low paying gig that he scheduled more than a month and a half ago. I passed up some sweet gigs for this one at King's Court. I would strongly urge any of the musicians that play there to think twice about booking King's Court or Ball's Bluff. Write a contract up maybe and save yourself some hassle!

Apr 25 2007 - 7:53 PM
Last night I played in the big leagues.....and I am not sure how I did. The recording doesn't sound bad. It appears the bar had a good night, which is why we are there after all. The bars down there are just different. I mean at Downtown Saloon, playing for a bunch of bikers, you know how you are doing right away usually. They either yell and clap or yell and throw beer bottles....ok I am exaggerating a little but they are definately more vocal. After each song in my first set, I didn't know whether these people heard me or not. Later in the evening, after talking to a couple of waiters and a few customers, it sounded like they were into what I was doing "they just always are like that".
Anyway, I want to say thanks to Lisa and Ben and all the other staff for making me feel at home. I had a great time! It is so fun to play places like that.
This week I play at Downtown Saloon as usual, then on Saturday I am at the Cancer Benefit in Jefferson County in the early evening and then Lenny and friends at King's Court at 9.30PM.
John Macier's band, Stereo Goat, I believe it is are playing at Ball's Bluff. If all of them play like John then they will be very good! Stop by and hear some great music on Saturday. One stop and two venues!!! I hope to see you there!
Have a great weekend!

Apr 22 2007 - 8:46 AM
Well the voice is going in and out! I had a good time though last night at the palace!! It was just me...no Lenny B and friends! I don't know where they all are. Fred played in Charlottsville. Barry was in Manassas and Jeff is on hiatus I think. (Where are ya Buddy???)
Thanks to Rob and the boys for coming out at the beginning! Lisa brought a group out with her and Captain Morgan and his lovely first mate came out and had dinner! What a beautiful night! I am ready for summer!!! Also some ladies stopped by after apparently visiting one of the local vineyards! One of them went to school in West By God even!!!!
I did try some newer songs when the crowd thinned out. I am stealing some tunes from my instructor Barry. He and I are playing in Shepherdstown on May 11th. So we are learning some of each others stuff. I think he is having an easier ime of it than me:)
The tip jar topped out at $63!!! We have raised just shy of $600 for them this year! $594.73 to be exact! Thank you whoever put in the .73 cents:) I will have to talk up the bucket for Habitat a little more. My goal is $2000 by the end of the year! One of my friends last night, Sean (not sure of spelling), mentioned her daughter (I think, could be getting story mixed up) is doing Relay For Life on May 12th. I may take a charitable detour on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of May and give the tips to that. Hopefully we can help them out! I will keep you posted! Thanks so much for the Habitat help though! Go to the links page and you can go on their site and see what our money is doing! :)
Tuesday I am auditioning sort of for Turner Productions at Shooter McGee's in Alexandria! I am actually nervous about this one! Gary Smallwood plays there and some other really good musicians! I feel like a little league player wlking into Cambden Yards! Hopefully from there I will get some good gigs and also play locally for them at Spanky's! I will keep you posted!
I hope you all have a good week! And I hope to see all of you in Leesburg on Saturday night! I am playing King's Court! Have a good week!

Apr 18 2007 - 9:26 PM
Well I played in Delaware this past weekend and I am still not back to 100%! I made it through but could feel my voice go on some songs. And at my lesson on Tuesday I tried singing with Barry and got the same result. I am gonna try my darnedest at Downtown Saloon on Thursday and we will see what happens. White Palace on Saturday and then Shooter McGee's on Tuesday. I have to be good for that one! Anyway I hope to see a lot of you guys out and about in the coming weeks. My gigs are slowing down it seems. I have to get out on the street! I think I pissed off PartyDC because I got sick! I did really feel bad about missing the gigs and I really wanted to play but I guess it will all work out. Anyway -- you guys have a good week and we'll see ya soon!

Apr 7 2007 - 9:09 AM
Well my busiest weekend since I started this music thing and I had to cancel my first show. I appreciate the support at Maxwell's last night and I apologize to all who came out to hear me and to Paul the owner! I sat for a while and sipped on a warm Irish whiskey and water and thought I could get it together! So I set up and made it through 2 and a half songs. My voice is gone!!! I have "called in sick" to my Cheeseburger gig, which I was really looking forward to and Fred may have to play by himself tonight, or at least sing a lot! I feel fine but and very upset that I can not fill my commitments! I hope all of you understand and have a great weekend!
|
Apr 6 2007 - 10:27 AM
Open mike last night was a lot of fun. The first player was a young lady and I am sorry I can't think of her name right now, Anna maybe. Anyway, what a set of pipes on this girl. She sang Shania Twain and Dolly Parton among others. For a lady this young to come in and play an open mike at a biker bar took a lot of guts! Fred invited her out to play on Saturday night with us so hopefully you will see her again! David Smiley cam out and played as well as Dave Peppa!!! David then joined Fred and I for some songs. That is fun when you can sit in and play with two great players! I had Fred on the right and David on the left and I tried to keep up!
Fred and I practiced for our upcoming gig at King's Court! Played some new songs and butchered some old ones:) Fred is at Cheeseburger tonight and I am at Maxwell's. My voice is about gone so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will hold on my busy weekend!
Thanks to all that came out! It was a great Thursday night! Fred is hosting next week so come help him out as well! Hope all of you can get out in the snow tonight!!!!

Mar 25 2007 - 1:21 AM
I played the Lighthouse last night! It was weird playing there by myself! But it was fun. Played for the locals and actually played some requests! I passed out the menus I made with my song lists on them and that helped! ++++++$50 in tips were collected for Habitat For Humanity! That brings our total to just over $300 in tips for the year for HFH! We received $40 on St. Patty's Day! That along with the set donation we are up to over $500!!!! Thanks a lot folks!!!

Mar 24 2007 - 4:25 AM
Fred and I played at two hospitals on the 19th. Fairfax INOVA hospital in the morning and Georgetown in the afternoon. At Fairfax the crowd was small, only a couple kids but i think the two moms that were there enjoyed us. At Georgetown though we went from room to room! Matthew joined us on his 11th birthday and he played percussion and sang along! That made the day even better! This was for an orginazation called Pickleberry Pie, you can get their link on our link page. All in all a very rewarding day! I hope we get to go back often.
Fred's website is up and running and he is getting the hang of putting stuff on it! I have hooked up with Turner Productions and am playing a gig in Alexandria next month for them. It is a place called Shooter McGee's! This is a really cool bar that I have not been to in a while.
I am excited about going into the studio finally. Barry and I have been practicing and hopefully we will get with Les Thompson soon and i will have more news! Stay tuned and I hope to see you all soon!

Mar 18 2007 - 9:01 AM
BOFUS played White Palace last night for St. Patty's Day! I have been wicked sick all week and really did not feel like playing. Jeff carried me through though with great guitar licks and good vocals!! The crowd was a little thin but we all had a good time! We have to get more of you out to the White Palace! It is really a neat little pub. Jose and his family and friends are awesome hosts. The food is good and Jose's pizza place is next door and he will bring you a pizza from there at the pub!!! I am starting to feel better slowly but surely. I am playing at the hospitals tomorrow with Fred Karam. That will be fun. I have to have these sinuses under control by then. Then Downtown Saloon on thursday and Lighthouse on Saturday! Hope to see you all there! Have a great week!

Mar 12 2007 - 7:41 PM
Friday night I played with Kim and Beth from October Skies at a place called Maxwell's in Middleburg! This is a very cool little pub! Great crowd and the staff was very nice. It is a really relaxed place right on the main drag which is Rte 50. It is easy to find and when the weather warms up, they have tables and chairs outside! Kim and Beth did some songs I have never heard them do and they sounded great! I couldn't hear how the crowd was reacting cuz I was singing along! Anyway Kim was nice enough to invite me and then let me hog the stage for a while. I want to thank Kim & Beth from October Skies and also thank you to Paul for having me there at your cool bar! I told him I would love to return so I will wait for the call:)
PartyDC booked October Skies there, so I may have to wait for them. Although they booked me at O'Faolain's in Sterling and then withdrew the offer, so I am not sure how booking through them is going to go. Some great bars on their roster but with schedule changes less than a month out, I am not sure how many of their gigs I can take. I hope to have some new venues for you folks soon though! So stay tuned!!!!!
Practice with Jeff last night and we worked on some Robert Cray tunes! Gotta love the blues! We will bring at least one of those to you on Saturday night --- Saint Patty's Day at the White Palace!!! We go on at 6PM and we will play til Jose says "GET OUT OF HERE!" I hope to see a lot of our regulars there! I will send out an email with April dates in about a week. I am having to rearrange some shows and I want to be sure they are a go before I email!
Have a great week folks! Remember open mike at Downtown Saloon on Thursday night!!

Mar 3 2007 - 11:00 PM
Mike Comini, a fellow musician and frequent flyer at the Downtown Saloon open mike, asked me to play "Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World" at a gymnastics meet in Sterling today! I went down to his place and was just amazed!!! First of all, not to say Mike is an older guy, but he has been in this business of coaching for 20 years he tells me, which by the looks of him I thought he must have started at age 6! Secondly, what a GREAT job he has! He obviously has a love for the sport and now he is working in that sport. And he is very sucessful at it! 20 years is a long time to be doing anything. The kids were great! I was around a little during warm-ups and stuck around just long enough to see a couple kids do their stuff. I went to see "Wild Hogs" with family, so had to scoot after my short set! Another blog entirely.... Anyway, I have to say thank you to mike for giving me an oppurtunity to play for those kids and their parents! And I really think that all of us that know Mike from the open mikes ought to check out his gym. It is very impressive and the work he does there has to be really rewarding! +++++++++++++++++I added some dates to the calendar! The Lighthouse has asked me to come back so I am playing there in two weeks. Barry is there next week, so if you can't make it to hear me at the Horseshoe Curve then check out Barry at the Lighthouse. Or go here a set there and then come to hear one of mine! Have a great week folks!!!!

Feb 25 2007 - 11:05 AM
The White Palace turned out to be a great place to play!! Jose asked us to start early, around 6 PM, and that worked out well! We ended up playing an extra hour and then I ended up playing a little unplugged after that. All in all I was there until midnight and had a great time. I was asked to provide music there every other Saturday!!! I am working on that because I have been blessed with talking enough people into letting me play for them that I am actually busy in Saturdays through April.
Jeff and I will return to the White Palace on St. Patty's day though! March 17th! I am psyched!! Purcellville is closer to me, the bar is a cool hangout, the people who work there are nice, and some nice locals!!
Thanks to all those who came out to hear us! Thank you to Fred for playing a set at the beginning! Fred and I got our wires crossed on this gig and ended up playing less together than was anticipated. Jeff came out and BOFUS is coming back!!! We have practiced once last week and played twice this week. We have some times we are a lil lost but times when things went so well!!!! Bruce and Rita, old friends from the neighborhood stopped by and those FAA guys showed up with their better halves!!! Nice to meet your whole family Bob! Captain morgan and his lass took a break from moving and stopped by! My mid buddy Ron was there with his wife and it was obvious neither one of us got too much sleep. But Mrs. Meyers made you look good buddy! And I got to sing to my co-worker Mike and his wife! So thank you all, I hope to see you again!
We also raised $65 in our tip bucket for Habitat For Humanity! That brings our total to $215 for the year! this doesn't seem like a lot but will all add up by December! Thank you for that!!!!!

Just an add on, Clark told me that Danny Knicely was having a CD release party in hillsboro tonight at 7PM at the old school house I think. Danny I guess just got back from Tibet and has a new CD. If you don't know Danny Knicely, he is local and plays about every stringed instrument known to man! Barry introduced me to him one summer and I took a few lessons from him. He has played on several of Keller Williams CDs and plays bluegrass better than anyone I know. Check Danny out, maybe google him or if you are near Hillsboro see if he is up there tonight!

Last night on my way to wprk i was gonna head by and see October Skies. They had a cancellation so I mosied up to King's Court to see Rob and Clark. WOW!!!! They are turning into Garcia and Grisman (sp?). They were just fooling around before the bar got crowded and some of the jams that were coming out were incredible. These guys are psychic, I'm telling you. They just know what the other one is going to do! Anyway, I played a little with Clark. We did my two new songs Out Loud and The General. These are songs by the band from Boston named Dispatch. Every time I play these two songs in the last few days, different people have played lead and the songs have taken on a whole new style! Then Mike from Downtown Saloon open mike, came up and sang along with me to Makin' Whoopee! He has a low raspy voice that is cool to listen to. And he also picks out some great tunes. You must check this guy out when he plays at our open mikes. I listened to one of his originals a couple weeks ago, Tip Of The Hat, I think it was called and it was AWESOME!! Anyway, rambling again, Clark and Rob's open mike is Fridays at 9.30PM at King's Court, so be sure to check it out!

First open mike on a Thursday and it wasn't bad at all!!!! I got to meet some new people, work with a new bartender (Lori) and wake up at 4.30 in the morning after to go towork.....OUCH!!! I appreciate all the people that came out to play and listen. October Skies did some great stuff last night! Beth Cox ---- Give it up for Beth on DA Guitar!!!!! A dude named Eric showed up and played some great 80s tunes we had not heard since.........Well the 80s! Thanks Eric and I hope you will be back! Also Fred was there to play with everybody! So once it warms up, I think Thursdays will be a great way to get the weekend started off right! So come out and join us next week!

Feb 4 2007 - 10:49 AM
Jeff came out last night and played with me as BOFUS!!!!!! BOFUS is back!!!!! OK Jeff and I say we are gonna play together all the time. We get together for an open mike and have a couple good songs and we agree it is fun playing together and we stroke each other egos saying how much we enjoy each others playing then we don't see each other for several weeks! Jeff and I are totally different I think sometimes but alike in a lot of ways too! We both love to play obviously, but we have very different lives. Jeff is as busy as a long tailed cat at a rocking chair convention and I work for the government......nuff said! I am happy that we can get together and zone in on certain music after weeks away. I had a new song last night I was nervous about playing called the General. Once again a song with some meaning. It is about a veteran of many wars, who the night before a big battle has a dream, maybe a vision, and wakes up, walks out of his tent and says enough!!! He carries out his orders but with obvious regret but only have sending his troops home. Anyway, I am getting off the subject, this song just has a shitload of words in it! It is hard to sing and not to easy to play. Jeff played it once in his kitchen and then twice at the Curve. He picked up on the vibe of the song and just nailed it! That gave me a little more confidence singing it as well. Long story short.....too late....it opened possibilities for jamming and having songs that a crowd can sing along with! I always think I will not pressure Jeff to play too much cuz he is busy, but I think I may send out a few more emails this month. Look for some BOFUS gigs in March hopefully. And who knows maybe this summer we can add a band! Oh and by the way ....... not that Jeff and I do this for the $$$$$, but I always seem to get him to come out to gigs that don't pay (proceeds for last night's performance went to Habitat For Humanity) and he does them anyway!!!! Maybe that is why I always play solo:(
Money last night was raised for Habitat For Humanity! Here is the news about that gig! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Last night was the first gig I played for Habitat For Humanity. A lot of joking around about Jimmy Carter and making houses last night, but when it came down to it we raised over $100 for Habitat For Humanity! LAMB Entertainment has opened an account with Habitat and I just pledged $25 a month to come out of our business account to keep a line open. This will come to $300 for the year. Now accounting is not my strong suit and I know this doesn't sound like high finance but if we can come up with $100 a month plus our base donation then we will have $1500 for the year. Now this does not sound like much maybe but Habitat for Humanity makes their money go a long way. Through donations of money, supplies, and time they do outstanding work. I really appreciate you guys that came out last night helping me help with such a great organization! I hope we can come up with a good year for them.
Last year we did a lot for the Salvation Army and we will still help them out in the fall for their Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Look for a post after every Horseshoe Curve Show for the totals for the Juke Joint's donations to Habitat!
|
Jan 23 2007 - 3:01 AM
Starting with the February 3rd show at the Horseshoe Curve, a portion of all shows will go to Habitat For Humanity. I have put a link up on the links page for you to check out all they do! All of my Horseshoe Curve dates will have a bucket for tips on the table in front of my music stand. All money from this bucket will be sent to Habitat! Please come out to these shows and support this great cause. If the oppurtunities arise for us to do more for this cause we will post them on the Juke Joint!

Jan 21 2007 - 8:22 PM
Well BOFUS may be back?????? I practiced with my long lost lead playing guitarist today! We did a couple Jim Croce tunes and some lder blues stuff. Jeff nailed the harmonies I think and did a pretty good solo right out of the gate on "Don't Mess With Jim"! But I will let you be the judge....take a listen on the juke box!

Jan 20 2007 - 9:13 PM
Well the new year is here and with that some changes! On February 8th we will be switching the open mike at the Downtown Saloon to Thursday nights. It will still be from 8-11PM. This Wed. the 24th will be the last open mike I will be hosting until the 8th of February. Fred Karam will host on the 31st of January so there will still be an open mike every week. There is another bar that has acoustic music on Thursday in Leesburg but not as consistantly and not half as good of a crowd as we have at our open mike so please stick with us! Another difference I guess as people are talking about is that the dynamic duo of Wed. nights is getting split up. Lisa doesn't work on Thursdays, Lori does. Lori is there on Wed sometimes early on so you might have met her! I look forward to working with her and Lisa has promised to come see us on occasion! I appreciate all the emails and guest book posts about Lisa moving to Thursdays but I am just the guitar player.....hey sounds like an album title! Any bar decisions are up to DA Big Guy - Scott. he is the owner and the one that has been nice enough to keep me around for almost a year now. So anyway, I am ramblin again! Come out Wednesday night and have a great time with Lisa and me. Come again the following Wed. to play with Fred and then on the 8th let's make the Downtown Saloon the PREMIER spot for acoustic music in Leesburg on Thursday nights!!!!

Dec 24 2006 - 1:50 PM
I would like to wish everyone who has visited the juke joint and has played with us over the past year a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
I played King's Court last night. Rob sat in and we played for four hours. Although, it was not the smoothest of shows it was a good way to round out the year. I do have one more gig at the Downtonw Saloon onWed.
I am looking back at the last year of playing and doing things with local music. Some of the tapes from early shows are horrible but at least I see some improvement. I have made some great friends this year as I have played around NoVA!
The crew I have to be most thankful to though is the Downtown Saloon. Scott has helped me out immensely this year. I have had a great time and learned a lot by doing this open mike. I hope it will continue. I really appreciate the confidence Scott had in putting me in that position when I was just getting started. I also have made the absolute best friend I think I could have made in the bar biz! My Favorite Bartender! Lisa and I have made a great team for a good part of a year. She is a great sounding board for my new music ideas - some good and some bad - and I appreciate her opinion! Definately has earned the rank of the World's Finest Bartender!
This year I became an honorary Bastard! Rob and Clark took me in and have taught me a lot. I finally got to play a song with Tim although he has no recollection of it. Fred has stuck with me as well and helped me progress! Now that he officially retired he is the "old timer" that I play with. I wish I could have retired with him:)
I started the year with a band and saw that band go into hiatus, just like Phish, as we pursue solo projects. Hey the reunion tour will have cool t-shirts!
And then all the faithfuls that come out all the time on Weds. I don't want to forget anyone so I am gonna lump you all together, you know who you are!
Anyway - Thanks to all of you guys! I am gonna play as much as possible this year and get better so come on out and see if I make good on my promise! I will be back with Barry this year for weekly lessons and I am taking a class from Berklee School of Music this semester and hopefully playing as much as humanly possible!!! I hope to see you all in the coming year!!!!

Back from a trip to FL and spent the evening at the CURVE!
First of all, FLORIDA! WOW! Except for the whole FAA and work thing I had a good time. Found an AWESOME place on the beach, right off of A1A! It is called High Tides. Go to the links page and check out their website. I will also have pics up of the place by tonight. Thanks to the staff at High Tides for a great couple of weeks! Happy Hour with $3.95 for a half pound of shrimp and cheap beer......HOOOOORRRRRAAAYYYYY BEER!!
Last night was slow at the Curve. My Bastard buddies showed up though. Thanks to Clark and Rob and assorted guests. Rob played some with me and WOW again, what a guitar player! It is a blast to play with the people I have been following around for better than a year! Then Rob and Clark played a short set! I could have listened to them all night. I will put one or two of those tracks on the jukebox as well as some pics tonight as well!
Remember folks, Wednesday night at Downtown Saloon. The unofficial Juke Joint Christmas party.....Yes that's right CHRISTMAS!!!! The reason for the season! No Kwaanza, no "holiday" greetings......Merry Freakin Christmas!
These views are the opinions of the author alone and do not reflect on the ideals or the opinions of the management of Lenny's Juke Joint!.........God Bless!
I am looking forward to reclaiming my spot at my favorite bar Wed. so come out and join Lisa and me, let's play some blues, and drink some beer.....HOOORRRRAAAYYY Beer!!!!
Next Saturday is King's Court -- I hope to see you there as well! Have a great week!

Don't get me wrong, I love for all people to come out and play my open mike! Hey that's how you get better, no matter what level you are on! Just a guidline or two though. If you are coming to play and I do not know you, then you need to let me know you want to play. I can not read minds. And if you don't have a guitar and I do not know you at all, then the chances of you playing Ms. Gibson are slim to none. Now if you add the fact that you are drunk off your ass when you ask me to borrow said guitar then you will either be heckled and/or asked to leave. Some of our visitors last night found that standing in front of me while I play, saying I suck and telling me your guitars are more expensive won't get you on either. If you have such a guitar, bring it next time! Rob Remington plays a $100 guitar and makes it sing. The best guitar player I have played with and the cheaper guitar, so a Les Paul Standard Custom GT with gold flake and flames and YADA YADA YADA.... doesn't impress me! Bringing your instrument when you want to come out and play.....now that is priceless!!!!!

Nov 30 2006 - 5:06 PM
I found someone to make me a demo. CHECK OUT THE KC SESSIONS! KC recorded about ten tracks for me on Tuesday night. It came out a lot better having someone else turn the knobs and mix the cd. I have to thank KC and Steve Adamski (proprietor of Adamski's Irish Pub) for lugging the gear, bringing the beer (Thanks also to Probie!), and mixing down the cd. I can't wait to get back from FL and record some more!

Nov 28 2006 - 3:13 AM
Well another week of three gigs for me. I played all week. Downtown Saloon, King's Court twice, and the Daily Grind. My voice was gone by Saturday night and feeling pretty drained by Sunday. Maybe this business trip is a good idea so I can take a break. I am afraid I did not get much for recording this week. I just wasn't thrilled with Saturday's recording. New music which was fun and playing with Rob was a good time, but the mix was off and voice was gone - or maybe that's just how I sing.....OOOOOHHHHHH NO!!!!
My dad asked for some recordings so I am gonna try to get something in my studio this week. After this Wed. I will be gone for two weeks. I am taking my guitar and have hopes of maybe playing an open mike or two in FL, but nothing is scheduled until the 16th of December at The Horseshoe Curve! By then I hope I will be rested and psyched to play some new songs and have a GREAT TIME!
Please come join me there or back at the Downtown Saloon on the 20th.
Without sounding too sappy I would like to thank all the people that have come out to support me in the past year. I have been playing out for a year now. I am having a good time for the most part and am looking forward to getting better in the coming year and playing some more venues! It has been great though seeing some of the same faces time after time though. And I have met some great musician friends and learned a lot from them! Even met some hopefully new friends on Friday and Saturday. Thanks for coming "tan boot girl" and your friends - nobody has normal names anymore- ! Also with a change if schedule I will be back taking lessons from my friend and guitar teacher Barry Charlton! So hopefully all those Daily Grind and Horseshoe Curve tips will pay off:)
In the meantime, have a good start to your holiday season! Please put the 16th and the 20th on your calendar! See you when I get back!!!

Well it has been a while since I updated the blog. I actually got busy with playing for a couple weeks! I had three gigs the first week of November and 4 the second. My fingers were HURTING!
Last night was a busy open mike at the Downtown Saloon. I had a lot of players come out and had a great time! I apologize if some people waited for a while. i do like to give everyone a chance to warm up a little and play 4 or 5. I think everyone got to play and some people twice! Fred was there with Miss Molly and the ladies from October Skies. It was fun listening to them and I got to play one with Fred. Dave Pepper was there playing for his lady! Mike and Joe and the LONG LOST MUDFLAP! Mudflap will be subbing for me in December I will let you know the date when it is available. Also hopefully Fred will do one too.
Anyway, worked out some new songs that are getting better! I am going to be out of town from December 4th through the 14th. The FAA in an effort to save money is sending all it's managers on every business trip under the sun, to FL, PA, OH etc. I get to ruin part of the Christmas season, miss my son's first ever Christmas concert playing trumpet, and sit for a week with a bunch of "Let's get ahead at the cost of others" assholes in FL. It doesn't even snow down there!
Anyway I digress! I will have a lot of yuletide celebrating to do when I get back. I have to cram my favorite season that usually lasts a month into two weeks. I will be playin at the coffee houses and Downtown Saloon, King's Court, and The Horseshoe Curve after the first of the year so keep coming back and check those dates. Also check out the new pics in the photo gallery! Thanks to all that came out last night! Too all visitors of the Juke Joint --- Happy Thanksgiving!

Nov 3 2006 - 8:17 PM
I played last night on a rare Thursday night at the curve. WOW, it was packed for a while. Had a couple of the loyal juke joint fans! Besides a visitor on that played along way too loud it wasn't a bad night. I hope I can get back on another Thursday, very laid back!
Wed. night at the Downtown Saloon was good as well. Rob came in and played at the end of the night. I finally was happy with a version af Soulshine! Mike played and I got to join in. Dave Pepper played and I got to join in! Fred played with October Skies and my long lost bald headed buddy played with a teio that I forgot their name, but you will here more from them, They were AWESOME!!!! I will get some of the tunes up on the juke box by Wed.
Tomorrow night at King's Court and I am excited!!!! My first big Saturday night gig by myself. We will see how it goes! Thanks to all that have come out to see me this year! I listened to some recordings from last year of my stuff and am surprised I still have some of the friends I do. WOW! I have got a long way to go but I think things are getting better! Anyway I am rambling! Come out and see me on Saturday, have a pint and listen to some blues!!

Oct 29 2006 - 11:10 AM
Last night was my first private party as a guitarist/singer! Outdoors and it was COLD!!! It was a great time though at a BEAUTIFUL location! And I had an awesome helper! I do want to thank Jo Ann and Lindsay for inviting me and taking good care of me. Played some old songs I have not played in a while and I think they came out OK. I will see if any are good enough for the juke joint jukebox. Friday night I went and played at Rob and Clark's open mike. Tim was there playing the harp with them. These guys are just incredible! They have morphed into blues with a hint of JAM band; and those are my favorite two types of music. I think when musicians get that good they get bored with playing just the normal music and amazing things happen. So if you get a chance to hear them any time soon then you should. I will get their dates up on the juke joint. Look for Bastards Of Twang!
I made a CD for my bartender and biggest fan Friday. I evidently promised it months ago. :) Anyway, the first time I put a string of songs on a cd and it was fun. I think I will try another but with a little more prep involved. Don't want to infringe any copywright, but if you are interested in any recordings let me know.
Have a great week folks! BIG week for me playing I will email something out tonight. Check the dates page!!

Oct 22 2006 - 8:34 AM
Last night at the curve!!!! A good night but once again I pick a night that there was some festival in the area. A good crowd and the beer was cold. I tried a few new songs and people didn't seem to mind! I set up two more dates there, one on a weekday night, we'll have to see how that goes. Thanks to Tracee and Jim for inviting me back! I played some with Clark on Friday night and just had an incredible time Friday! It's fun getting to know all the people that are involved in and around Leesburg in the local music scene. Anyway, I am at work, making good use of your tax dollars and writing this after little sleep. I hope to see a lot of you on Wed. night! That is my only night next week. Then in November the first week I have three gigs. I will start donations to the Salvation Army off all my shows starting sometime in November! You can also make donations with the link on my links page to my Salvation Army Kettle! Have a good week!

Oct 15 2006 - 3:46 PM
So I am mowing my lawn yesterday and I get a call from a real bastard.....Rob Remington! He says "Me and Elwood we're puttin' the band back together!" He needed some help playing at the Downtown Saloon and he called me. I said, "Rob, It's 28 miles to Leesburg, I have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and I'm wearing sunglasses." OK that's not what I said, but I agreed, and for better or for worse I was an honorary Bastard of Twang last night. I gotta tell you I was nervous as hell! I have never played with more than a bass and a lead player. Rob went relatively easy on me and I muddled through. I think I drove a some people out of the bar though.....sorry Scott! I had a blast but am thinking I better stick to my mellow coffee house stuff! I did record a bunch and will be going through it all tonight to see if anything could go on the jukebox. It was great to see the regulars out there! Thanks to All, Dave Saunders playing Bass, Mike Rowle on Drums and Rob playing guitar.

I played The Daily Grind in Charlestown WV last night. What a great place to enjoy coffee and believe it or not GREAT FOOD! I had a marinated chicken sandwich on some weird kind of bread that was AWESOME! Kind of light fair there, and it all looks healthy and what I tasted was great. The hosts of the evening brought around a plate with goodies (banana bread, pastries, etc.). They serve coffee as well as smoothies and hot chocolate. Some of my "groupies" had the soup and liked it as well. OK enough about food, now I am hungry! I played straight through the two hour set and had a good time. The crowd was fun and atmosphere very relaxed. Free internet access available at this location, so you can come in and get some work done, answer some email, drink some java and listen to some blues! I have been invited back but the details are still be ironed out. I will let you know but until then go check out the Daily Grind in Charlestown!!!!

Oct 2 2006 - 1:14 AM
What a weekend! Well it started out good! OK no it didn't, but the weather is nice! Friday night I went to Rob and Clark's open mike. I played a couple with Rob, which is always fun. Clark, Tim and Rob played a few that I caught before I left. I also heard a lady named Sally Foster! She has a great voice and plays some good blues. I listened to a couple of hers and then stopped by the Downtown Saloon on my way out of town. Sally came down to return a capo and I got a CD from her. She gave me permission to put some on the jukebox, so give me a day to do that and you can hear her! Also she promised to let me know when she is back in town and playing; should be in November. I met a lady named Diva who DJed for the company I used to work for, NARD's. She hustled out to catch the last call at King's Court, but it was nice meeting you Diva! Kareoke at Downtown Saloon on Fridays. The place was packed!
Rob played Saturday at the benefit and I heard it was good. He asked me to play but I was VERY sick on Saturday, so I missed all the fun. Sorry Rob!
Anyway, it is 1 AM and I am rambling. This week is another open mike for me and a short set at a benefit on Saturday in Waterford. Check out the dates for details. Rob talked to the manager at King's Court for me so I should be back in there in the near future. I will as always keep you posted. I think Mud Flap is coming to the Open Mike this week. See you there!

Sep 28 2006 - 12:00 PM
Good open mike last night. kinda of thin crowd, but I traded my Alvarez for another Gibson, Fred came and played with me, Tim's brother played some tunes....WOW (good singer/songwriter/guitar player), Rob came in late and played several with me and that was EXTREMELY fun!!! I watched political discussions that were a cross between Hardball and Jerry Springer, Hardball for the content and Springer...cuz I wasn't so sure people weren't gonna throw chairs:) Oh well, you will NEVER have a dull night at the downtown saloon! This weekend they are having a motorcycle show! It is a benefit and I wish I could tell you more about it, but if you go there tonight or Friday and look up on the wall you will see a huge sign for it. Friday night they have Kareoke with a good DJ and a smokin' Hot Bartender.....:) Fred is playing down in Charlottsville and Va Beach this weekend! I am not playing anywhere! But I did pass out a few demos last night so we will see where that leads! I will send out an email with the dates as they roll in! Hey keep coming back to the juke joint and remember to sign the guest book and leave your email so I can bug the hell out of you with ALL MY GIGS!!!!!! Have a great weekend!

Sep 27 2006 - 5:03 PM
Went to Kirkpatricks in Ashburn to drop off a demo. EXCELLENT wings and music on certain nights. Check them out! I hope to play there soon!

Sep 24 2006 - 7:51 PM
Well, OK now I got past the hard day after the great night at Horseshoe Curve. I still am in need of sleep though. Thanks to all that made it out last night. First timers - Scott and Ron, my groupies - Maureen, Steve and Paul, Doug and Rose, and my favorite bar babe, Lisa! Also Rachel and her hubby came and Rachel sang a few with me. Great pipes on this lady! I can't wait to be Rachel's back-up singer again! I was worried about not having enough music, but after counting them over and over and a PEP talk from Fred, I made it through with several songs unplayed! The recording stunk that I made, at least I hope it did not sound that bad. I think I will record with a mike next time. Anyway I rambling, I met Kaluha Kathy , I saw why the Italians don't play baseball a lot,I saw a picture of the Horseshoe Curve Complaint Department, and ended the night with a dance with a pretty girl - so all in all it was a GREAT night! I will be back there on the 21st of October- so Let's Go Back to the Curve!

Sep 24 2006 - 2:55 AM

Sep 21 2006 - 9:36 AM
Well yesterday Rachel and I practiced, our weekly rehearsal! I think Rachel is about to the point to come join me for a couple songs out! I don't want to put on the pressure but it could be soon..... She has a lovely voice and is really putting some new spins on some old songs! Open Mike last night! Mudflap is cheating on me!!!!! For an open mike in Strasburg!!!!!! I am sure it doesn't mean a thing and it is just a couple of songs! They didn't even call me....... Oh well I bet that bar didn't even have Heinekens!! Probably some draft light beer! But they definately didn't have the WORLD"S GREATEST BARTENDER --- at whatever place that was in Strasville, Stephen's burg, wherever.... Just kiddin' guys, but we did miss ya! October Skies showed up and played with Fred! They were great! Rumor has it they may play tonight with Fred at King's Court! I wish I could be there! I put one of their tunes up there for you guys to hear! Joe was there once again and stole my lead guitar player for a few! I love hearing the regulars every week! Everyone is getting a lot better! Also Jeff, John and I did some songs we always do and some we don't. 16 Tons we played for the first time and I thought it was decent! It is on the jukebox, let me know what you think! Look for an email today with weekend dates on it! A lot of music going on this weekend! Thanks for stopping by!

Sep 14 2006 - 11:35 AM
Downtown Saloon last night......My dad is in town and no one showed!!!!! How rude! Well it was a rainy night. Thanks to Steve and Maureen for coming out and thanks again to Rob for playing a couple! I just added one of his originals to the jukebox. Check it out! The second track, I think the title is Camera Doesn't Lie, Rob correct me if I am wrong. Next week I have the Downtown Saloon on Wed., Fred is at King's Court on Thurs., Fred is at Xuan Saigon on Fri., and I am at the Horseshoe Curve on Saturday! Come on out and see us!
|
Sep 9 2006 - 2:05 AM
I joined Fred at The Beautiful South! I played probably five songs with him. WOW -- I think we did alright! KC and Steve came out from the FAA and we met a great couple Joy and Bill(?)! Joy and her hubby know Barry, my guitar teacher, and seem to know the crew at the Beautiful South! Well I think with their help I may get a gig there eventually! It was a fun place to play and Fred and I did a very impromptu version of 16 tons which you are probably listening to now. Enjoy and I hope to see you all soon! Thanks Fred!!!

Sep 5 2006 - 1:42 AM
Well I thought I would have more dates for you by this time, but I do not. I am still holding out on my demo until I get a good means to record again. I ordered an MP3 recorder from my friends at American Musical Supply that will work well with MAC. I sold the MD recorder. I will most likely record solo work in the coming weeks and try to push the solo thing in the coming months. I will be playing with Fred occasionally hopefully. He is out and about playing solo as well. Barry Charlton is back in town and playing at the Beautiful South among other places. I will let you know his dates as he plans them. If I can get him to agree I will try to play a couple gigs with him as well. Look for the coffee shop thing for me in October! But until then, come on down to Downtown Saloon on Weds. I am playing usually about an hour a night and getting some good players to play the other sets that night. John has played with me the last 6 Weds. as well as offering his wicked bass groove to the open mike players. Jeff joined me for a set last week as well. I am off this morning at 0730 and planning on practicing all day . Wednesday I am getting together with Rachel, a very talented singer who I work with during the day. She is recording a Christmas CD and we are gonna get together to record and practice. I would love to get her singing with me out and about! Maybe I can coax her into it so you guys don't have to listen to my voice as much ! Anyway remember Downtown Saloon on Weds. and Horseshoe Curve on Saturday the 23rd of September!!!!!!

Well this week I turned the BIG 4 - 0!!! Thanks to all that came out and helped me celebrate!
Open mike last night! Not a huge crowd but fun people! We had a guy named Carl come out and play some great instrumentals on his Strat! Stanley Jordanesque I would say! Mike also came out and did some originals. I love that song Chicago! John and Jeff played with him a little and we all played on the last tune he did. Thanks to the lovely ladies from the Old Mill Vet Clinic for listening to us and applauding! We will have to learn some Heart and other "girl" songs! Oh yeah and some Etta James for Jennifer!
I went to King's Court and played a few tunes with Fred after the open mike. he was subbing there, playing some reggae...........NOT! Fred tells me he will be there playing some more every other Thursday. I am not sure when that starts but as always come back and visit the Juke Joint and we will have the dates up soon!

Well last night was a good night at the Downtown Saloon. I have been at an FAA conference all week in DC and came to town just to play. I needed that after dealing with a bunch of stuffed shirts all week. Got there early and had.....you guessed it! A half price burger! I am telling you BIGGER STOOL for me at the next gig! Maybe next time a turkey burger. Mudflap played and they keep getting better and better! Jeff and John and I played and although we have not gotten better, we have only played together twice since May, we had a good time I think. Fred joined us on electric guitar and it was fun to play with him again. We had a dude named Wade play "A Boy Named Sue"! Nice job Wade! Fred and I played some on our own and then a surprise, Rob came out and did 2 originals and my alltime favourite Robert Johnson tune! Rob and Tim were both there and told me they are playing at Balls Bluff on Saturday night. If you are not coming out to my 40th then hit Balls bluff and check out the Bastards! Also check back here for more of their dates! Ann took some pics last night so I will have those posted as soon as I get back from DC! Talk to you guys next week!!!!!

I thought I had put something on here about Mudflap at The Horseshoe Curve on Saturday but I lost it so here it is again! First let me say what a cool place! This pub has a lot of history and evidently has been around for generations but I just heard about it recently. It is in a house sort of and the view from the parking lot is INCREDIBLE!!!!! It is on Old Route 7 near the Appalachian Trail. The lady that runs the place is Tracee Wink. She will make you feel at home right when you walk through the door! No beer on tap but plenty to choose from in bottles. Her hubby, I believe is there as well, along with her dog(s) (I think I saw two) roaming around. The food that I had was excellent as well, not your typical bar food but more like someone actually took time to make you a burger rather than just heat one up. With burgers like these and Downtown Saloon's half price burger night I am gonna need a BIGGER stool at my gigs soon! Anyway, Toby and Chris introduced me to her and she invited me to play n the 23rd of September!
Last night however it was Mudflap! These guys are so fun to watch. I met them at my open mike about 3 months ago. They come every other week. (They will be there this week if you are marking your calendar) Toby and Chris sing a blend of music that everyone knows and can sing or dance to! And that is just what the crowd does! From country to rock classics. Chris plays electric guitar and Toby plays an acoustic, both share the singing duties. I will start putting more of their gigs up here on the calendar as I get them for you! But until then come out Wednesday to the Downtown Saloon and you can hear them play a set or two......Well Awwwwwwrrriiiggghhhhttt!!!!!
Thanks guys for getting me a gig ---- I owe you one!

I went to see Bastards Of Twang last night at the Downtown Saloon! I wanted to go hear Rob, Clark, Tim and company play a couple songs and then get home to bed, seeing as how I had a 6.30AM shift today. Well they started at 9.20, I left at 10.30. One set, three beers, and countless blues riffs later I was finally heading home. I have listened to Clark and Rob a lot, I play their open mike on Friday nights often at King's Court Tavern. You get them together with Tim on Harp and their bass and drummer (names to come later) and it is a slammin' combination! The only bad part of the eveing was that their lapsteel player was having difficulties and I missed out on hearing him join the set. He played the second set I believe. I took pics and will get them on site soon. Also Rob said they have a demo and a website coming soon! I will get a link to them and maybe a few of their tunes up here as well. It is hard to describe their style. A lil Taj Mahal, a lil Preservation Hall Jazz, and a lil Willie Dixon just for spice.....they had the biker crowd tapping their feet along with a party from next door, at Lightfoot, in evening wear, the Bastards had everyone singing along! Note to the bar owners who are visitors to this site! Anyway, I guess you can tell I enjoyed the show! Now back to Blues In A Blender. Well, we are still in limbo. I am waiting for a practice and I will let you know when the trio can play out again. In the meantime, I have a demo on the streets and hopefully will be playing some solo gigs out and about in the coming months. As always I hope to be joined by friends! Barry is back this month and I will tell you where he is playing! You guys have a great week! See ya Wednesday!

WOW! I take one week off from the open mike and come back to a HUGE crowd of people! We had a great night at the open mike. Had a guy name Hassel (sp?) play and he kicked ass! His first open mike by himself and he did a great job! Thanks to MUDFLAP for coming out and bringing Hassel with them. Also met a trio that may be playing with us next week. Jeff was still MIA ---- Where are you Jeff???? We need your guitar licks!!! Dave Thomas came out to play from Florida! Since opening his hambyrger joint and living it up in the Florida sunshine he has taken to shredding on the blues guitar! I wish Jeff would have been there to have dueling guitars!!! Anyways.... Dave will be at Rob and Clark's open mike at King's Court to play with them. Fred will be at The Beautiful South Friday night as well. Fred was at the open mike as well as Bob with his Washburn! Hey thanks for the great turnout and let's all do it again next week! Also Check out Clark, Rob, and Tim at the Downtown Saloon on Saturday night! More Blues!!!

July 1st I played a gig with Shotgun Ride in Sharpsburg MD! WOW they have come a long way! We split the duties and played about 2 hours each! What a party! I have put a link to their website up and I will hopefully have some MP3s up soon of their performance! You know I record everything! Hopefully we will play together again in the future, it is a good mix of Southern Rock and whatever I do! Anyway check out www.shotgunrideband.com sometime.
Condolences go out to Jeff and his family this week. Last week his father passed away. Jeff you are in our thoughts and prayers - my guitar slinging brother!
John is in a new band and they played their first gig on Saturday as well. I am sorry I don't remember the name of the band and have lost the email. Sounds like it is a big group and they play some cool music so I will get more info as they play out and about. Did I lose my bass player you ask? NO - It looks like Blues In A Blender might be making a reunion comeback appearance at the Downtown Saloon on Wednesday night. I am hosting the open mike and Jeff is back and John is available! So come out and here us play and get a half priced burger Wednesday night!

Jun 28 2006 - 3:50 PM
Well we have all been busy this summer. John, Jeff, and I have been on vacation, on business trips, and doing family stuff! We are still trying to play together as much as we can. Jeff has made it out to a couple of open mikes with me and I have not seen John in a while but get emails every now and then. We will be gearing up this month hopefully to start playing out again in August and September! Also in August look for an invite to my first of hopefully many "wakes". I turn 40 this month and will be having a bash out in West By God Virginia! Hey after you get past customs and the strip search it is not that bad of a drive! So look for us playing near you soon! Until then come on out to the Downtown Saloon on Wednesdays and see me and enjoy a half priced burger!

While we are not playing at the Lighthouse any time soon, some of our friends are! October Skies is there this Saturday night the 9th. Fred and Jason play there on the 16th and Barry Charlton on the 22nd! Cherrie also scheduled Barry once in May as well. We are gonna see about playing some there on Sundays maybe and maybe a Saturday as they do some things to the place. This is a great restaurant and we really are trying to do all we can to help them get established. Plus they are just really nice people! Come hang out this Saturday night!

Mar 29 2006 - 4:47 PM
Blues In A Blender played our last show at The Lighthouse for a lil while. We are taking a short break from there while they do some stuff to the place. There are still 3 Saturdays of acoustic music there though so check back with the Juke Joint. We had some friends come by and visit and had a great night I thought. The first set was great, second set was good with a lil shakyness, and the third set we were tired. Guess what set did NOT record:) Oh well, it was fun to play with John again. We have all had Cub Scouts, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Dance and other assorted kid activities that have prevented us from practicing a lot with each other. It is great to get together and play and have friendly faces enjoying our music though, so thank you all who made it out. I hope to add some Leesburg or at least Loudoun County dates to our calendar soon, so look for those.

Blues In A Blender back again and at a new place! I have to thank Cherrie and Chad for letting us play at their place. They are getting used to running the Lighthouse and we are getting used to playing as a trio. My girl's Birthday was celebrated in style. Good food and great people! Thanks to our groupies from White Post, Boyce and Winchester! John's fan club filled the front table and sang along all night! This was our audition and it was supposed to be 2 hours. We played til 11 or so and got invited back! I think Ann and I counted 25 people from the Juke Joint! I am really happy with how this is going with putting other people on this web site and networking with the other musicians. Some of you know I managed bands before 9/11, but this is much more fun. I have three dates to fill at the Lighthouse. We are playing the 4th, Barry is playing the 18th and hopefully one of our friends will be playing the 11th. I will keep you posted! Tonight was good musically after the first couple songs. We stood up:) Hard to see music but HEY music is for pansies anyway. John was laying down a "wicked Bass groove". If you had any doubt what I meant by that you only had to listen to him tonight! We added several new songs and everything went pretty well. KC even played a couple -- Thanks DUDE! Jeff had a good night as well and nailed Don't Think Twice! DUDE !!!! SWEEET! Thanks again to all and see you out there next weekend!

Played with Barry on Saturday night. I have been battling a cold for a week so I was not that upset to not see many people there when we started. The first thre songs ' vocals were rough to say the least. Barry brought his basterdized Fender Tele to play. It has an acoustic bridge and a Martin thinline pickup as well as the normal Tele pickups. He can make it sound electric or acoustic. I gotta tell you all the guitar work sounded awesome. Very subtle at times and kick ass leads at others! I wish I could play like that. Be sure to check him out when he is playing nearby! He is a great guitar player with a great sense of humor and his enjoyment of music shows in his playing! Thanks Barry for the late night lesson!

The Lone Oak - Thursday night at the Lone Oak. Well after talking to Jeff about how he thought we did, I have to agree we had an off night. This is a rehearsal night though and I have to remember we have been together as a trio for a month or so. One of John's friends mentioned that some of our material was more suited to a coffee house enviroment than to a bar. I have to agree, the only problem is I don't want to just play Buffet and Van morrison just so I can play somewhere. I pick songs because I like what they say or they make me think. OK sometimes I pick them cuz I know all the chords but usually I try to pick songs that say something about what I am thinking. I think Jeff and John are starting to get ideas for tunes to do as well and I hope that is how they feel as well. We do need more material but that will come as we go along. We have added some tunes to practice next week that John said already he could play and Jeff picks up on anything almost so stay tuned. Thanks to John's friend Ryan for coming out with his wife and distracting us with a BIG OLD plate of ribs!!! Note to self......eat before you go play!

The LRR Party! A late entry -- sorry Jeff -- Blues in a Blender played their first private party! And John and Jeff saw the "had a bad day and losin it" side of their rhythm guitar player! I have to say I thought this was gonna be a bad gig. A bad day at work, equipment that wasn't working and a back that is still hurting put a cloud on the first part of the evening. Two things we are working on is learning more songs and getting away from the book and stand. I like playing by myself sometimes but when the trio is together it seems kind of silly. Also I think the trio is starting to really get good. I was a lil nervous playing for my old running buddies, sorry not old, my running buddies. But the comments from the evening were very nice. Several people that heard Jeff and I play in early December had said that we have gotten much better. I appreciate that and I know we will be even better by summer ! Jeff kicked butt on the Doobies song, South Central Midnight Lady! Shows you what having a pretty lady in the crowd to sing to will do for you, cuz face it, when you get down to it, every guitar player learned his instrument to impress chicks! Jeff's leads are the best of anyone I have played with. After managing several bands, I have seen many guitar players stomp all over a song. Jeff adds wonderful licks and then just hangs out on rhythm in between. And the vocals are good to, (Ann said SING LOUDER!) John's bass playing is keeping us in step! If we could add a percussionist to his rhythm section he wouldn't be so lonely over there. We also need to work on stage set up. John is our true musician in the trio and most of his bass lines are things he has written cuz he gets crappy tabs from me ! All in all we are getting tighter as a group. We have been added to a local musicians site from Winchester - check out the links. I wrote her before we had a name so it just says Lenny B Trio but it links you back to The Juke Joint! We have, hopefully, another gig coming up at Downtown Saloon. The Beautiful South is looking at us for the summer on their deck. We have a tentative date in March! The Lone Oak - Kings Court - and hopefully more as we progress! Thanks to you all for coming out to these gigs. Oh and we will have a demo by March so hang in there! A friend of ours is helping us out with that - KC - he has dropped the sunshine band and has played with us at several open mikes. Also Barry Charlton is a guy you will see posted on our site a lot in the future. He is an AWESOME guitarist and a fun guy to go listen to! Until next entry - take it slow - see ya in Boyce!

Well the trio has a name. "Blues in a Blender" I have to give Ann her props for coming up with the name, she won the contest! I will give you your prize later ! We figure we play blues blended with a lil country and rock and jazz --- all blended together for an eclectic mix of.............music that we play. Hell I don't know. We play anything that I can keep up with these guys to and that will make you tap your feet! See you next Thursday!

Jan 29 2006 - 9:05 PM
We played at Market Street Coffee in Purcellville Saturday night! John came with us and we all crammed in to the corner. All the music seems to come together more and more. Except for the fact that we are still learning the songs as a trio, we are hitting the ground running. John is picking up the music faster than we can come up with songs. And if you missed this performance you missed Jeff singing more and more! SO -- look for us out at some more venues in Leesburg and one in Hamilton as I try to get bar owners to commit:) Thanks to our cast of regulars who came out Saturday! They even brought more groupies! Hey even my old landlord and running buddy from "DOWN UNDA" made it with his bride "Lovely Rita"! Thanks for coming Bruce! Nice to see you again! Next up a private party but Downtown Saloon is beckoning!!!

Last Night -- Double booked at Downtown Saloon. We ended up opening for a band that I liked. I will get their name and link and put it up. It was Karl & the Danger Zone - I think. Blues and old foot stomping Rock-n-Roll!!! It worked out for the best, We practiced for almost four hours on Saturday morning and that was great! We worked on harmonies and getting John, our bass player, into the fold! This guy is good I gotta tell you! I worked on standing and singing! Jeff.......well Jeff doesn't need to work on much. he is a good lead player and comes ready to play --- with tons of gear! We used the other bands gear which by the way Carl, Thanks!!! And got a good reaction from the bar! We plan on playing there again in the future ---- by ourselves so check back and look for dates! More lessons this week for me, gotta catch up to the band and an impromptu addition of a coffee house gig this Saturday! I love playing there, no pressure and good people at Market Street Coffee! Go in and get a cup of Java in Leesburg and ask when BOFUS will be there again Thanks to all who made it out Saturday! By His grace --- Lenny

Tuesday night at Downtown Saloon. Well I thought our performance was not so great at the start but got better as things went along. It is a "catch 22" trying to get better to play shows by playing shows out in town, but I guess we have to do it! I do thank all of you that made it out to suffer through another one:) It is always better when you look out and see friendly faces! All my friends from Adamski's Irish Pub! Oh yeah, and I will learn Free Bird...........NOT! I recorded both sets hoping to get some music to put on the web site, but both of my MDs have a disc error this morning so maybe that is for the best. We will try again later. We have been asked to come back to the Downtown Saloon! I have to get with the owner to get a firm date but sometime in Jan. I started this in the hopes of getting about 2 or 3 shows a month and we may have them for next month already so stay tuned! Have a great Christmas and a blessed new year!

Well Saturday night went a little better! Cold is going away! I played for about 2 hours at Downtown Saloon. I was the opening act for the Raise the Woof Benefit. This is the place that I did most of my first open mikes and it was fun being back there! i also have to thank Rob Remington for talking to the manager with me and getting me the December 20th gig there. Saturday I got to play with Rob some and then my long lost buddy Fred Karam joined me for a few songs. You know, I am so happy to be playing out on my own some, but it is also a blast to sit down with a great guitar player! Fred and i have played enough together that things just always seem to work. Anyway, Gary Smallwood and company played after me! WOW!!!! What a sound they have. Great voices and great playing. They had a bass player, Bryan Fox I believe, and Josh Burgess on guitar and a percussionist. It was fun to listen to their selection and dream of how I could sound someday maybe. They are also super nice guys! They all complimented my set, which means a lot. I missed Clark and Rob's band playing so i was a lil bummed about that. I hope to get their dates on here soon so you can all go hear them. I know they are playing Leesburg's first night either at Tally Ho or a church. I will let you know. I will also try to get a demo on my site here this week! Keep checking back

Well Jeff and my first Market Street gig together! We did OK! Too much new gear to distract me but I think we are getting better! Jeff played two songs by himself that were great. I just had the sound set so you couldn't hear him that well.......Sorry Jeff. John, the bass player, came out and met Jeff and I don't think we scared him off, so look for some more instrumentation hopefully in the coming year. John seems like he is just what we need. Time will tell! Thanks to all who came out and thanks for your patience as we get better. I stopped by and played a few songs with Clark and rob at Kings Court Tavern. They have an open mike on friday nights. these guys are very good. They are playing tomorrow night at Downtown Saloon. You gotta check them out if you like blues! Clark and I played Crazy which he nailed as usual. Clark is a very soulful player and has a great ear. Rob is very bluesy and can do wonders with a flat top! They asked me to host an open mike in January at Kings Court so look for that! Well off to bed! I hope to see some of you tomorrow night!

Dec 7 2005 - 12:52 PM
